Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy in horses is a diagnostic procedure that involves the use of an endoscope, a long, flexible tube with a light and a camera at the end, to examine the internal structures of a horse's body. At our clinic we perform daily many endoscopies to investigate and diagnose various conditions affecting the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems of our patients.

Here are some key aspects of endoscopy in horses:
Upper Respiratory Endoscopy
One of the most common uses of endoscopy in horses is to examine the upper respiratory tract, including the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, and trachea. Abnormal clinical signs such as nasal discharge, coughing, and abnormal respiratory sounds can be investigated. Common conditions include laryngeal hemiplegia (roaring), equine recurrent airway obstruction, sinusitis, guttural pouch infections and mycosis.
Lower Respiratory Endoscopy

This minimally invasive procedure allows for visual examination of the trachea, bronchi, and lungs using a flexible endoscope. It is a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying respiratory conditions such as infections, inflammatory airway diseases like equine asthma, and structural abnormalities. During the procedure, the horse is typically sedated to ensure comfort and safety. The endoscope provides real-time video footage, enabling accurate diagnosis and the development of targeted treatment plans to ensure optimal respiratory health and performance for your horse.

Overground Endoscopy
In addition to endoscopy at rest, we also conduct dynamic endoscopy during exercise to capture a comprehensive view of the upper airway in action. This diagnostic procedure provides real - time insight into the functionality of the respiratory system during exercise. This procedure is particularly valuable for identifying and understanding upper airway pathologies that may only become apparent when the horse is actively working. This unique approach allows us to assess the functional ity of the airway under conditions that may trigger specific pathologies, providing valuable insights that may be missed during static examinations.
Gastroscopy
This procedure involves passing the endoscope through the horse's nose or mouth and down into the esophagus, stomach, and sometimes the small intestine.
Conditions Diagnosed: Common gastrointestinal issues include gastric ulcers, esophageal obstructions, and other abnormalities in the digestive system.
Oral Endoscopy
This minimally invasive proc edure ensures a comprehensive assessment of your horse's oral cavity. During the procedure, the horse is typically sedated for comfort and safety, and a thorough examination of the mouth, teeth, tongue, and gums is performed. The endoscope is an essential diagnostic tool for identifying dental issues, oral lesions, and other abnormalities that might affect your horse's health and performance. The endoscope provides real - time video, enabling precise diagnosis and effective treatment plans.
