Urogenital Sugery

Urogenital Sugery

When medical intervention is not enough, surgical solutions can address reproductive and urinary tract challenges in both mares and stallions. Our hospital is equipped to perform a range of specialized reproductive and urinary tract surgeries, ensuring the best outcomes for your horse.

Urogenital Surgery for Colts & Stallions

  • Castration – Routine and advanced gelding procedures for young colts and mature stallions.
  • Cryptorchidism – The removal of retained testicles when one or both fail to descend into the scrotum. If the testicle is retained within the inguinal canal, the procedure may be performed through an inguinal incision under general anesthesia or, if the testicle is within the abdominal cavity, via standing laparoscopy. This minimally invasive approach reduces post-operative pain, shortens recovery time, and lowers the risk of infection compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Inguinal hernias – Surgical repair of hernias to prevent complications in young colts and breeding stallions.
  • Penile or testicular tumor removal – Treatment for neoplastic conditions affecting reproductive organs.
  • Penile amputation – Required in cases of severe injury or advanced tumors affecting the stallion’s quality of life.
  • Bladder stone removal – Extraction of calculi to relieve urinary obstruction and discomfort.

Urogenital Surgery for Mares

  • Ovariectomy – Removal of ovaries in cases of granulosa cell tumors, or behavioural issues.
  • Caesarean section & reproductive emergencies – Emergency surgical intervention for difficult foalings when immediate action is required to save the mare and foal.
  • Caslick’s operation – A common procedure to reduce air aspiration and prevent infections in the reproductive tract.
  • Endometrial cysts laser removal – Precision laser surgery to remove uterine cysts that may interfere with implantation and fertility.
  • Laparoscopic uterine tube prostaglandin application – A minimally invasive procedure that has been shown to enhance fertility in selected sub-fertile mares unresponsive to medical treatments.
  • Perineal repair – Surgical correction of perineal injuries, including those caused by foaling.
  • Twin management – Early intervention to reduce risks associated with twin pregnancies, including selective reduction.
  • Bladder stone removal – Surgical extraction of calculi affecting urination and overall health.
