Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedics is the largest surgical discipline at Grosswallstadt Equine Clinic with the most common procedures including arthroscopy, tenoscopy surgery and fracture repair.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopic surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery designed to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for joint-related issues. The minimally invasive nature of the procedure results in less trauma, contributing to improved cosmetic outcomes. Moreover, horses undergoing arthroscopy experience a faster recovery, facilitating a prompt return to athletic activities. Commonly addressed conditions include chip fractures, OCD lesions, cartilage damage, ligament tears, meniscus injuries in the stifle joint, and joint infections. Additionally, our arthroscopic service extends to tenoscopy and bursoscopy, allowing us to diagnose and treat conditions of tendon sheaths and bursas like injured tendons and navicular syndrome.
Fractures
Our specialist surgeons have access to the most advanced technology and facilities to diagnose and treat equine fractures that were once thought to be career or life-threatening. Combining their extensive surgical experience with advanced imaging such as CT examination and intraoperative arthroscopic visualization allows for accurate repair to ensure the best outcome possible for your horse.
Although most fractures are repaired under general anaesthesia, more simple fractures are now amenable to standing fracture repair using minimally invasive techniques. Typically, this involves inserting multiple bone screws in the standing sedated horse, thus avoiding the risks associated with recovery from general anaesthesia in the fractured patient.
Tenoscopy

Tenoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery designed to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for tendon-related conditions in horses.

Our surgeons utilize tenoscopy as a powerful diagnostic tool to investigate the root cause of lameness. The high-resolution images captured during the procedure allow for accurate assessments of tendon and tendon sheath health, aiding in the formulation of targeted treatment plans. Through the endoscope, our surgeons can perform procedures such as debridement, removal of affected parts, and the application of regenerative therapies directly to the affected tendon, promoting optimal healing.

Equine tenoscopy is particularly beneficial for addressing conditions such as:

  • Superficial and Deep Digital Flexor Tendon debridement
  • Palmar/Plantar Annular ligament desmotomy
  • Manica flexoria removal
  • Infected tendon sheath lavage

Following the tenoscopy procedure, our clinic provides comprehensive rehabilitation support to aid in your horse's recovery. Our team will work closely with you and your referring veterinarian to develop a personalized rehabilitation plan, including exercise regimens and ongoing monitoring to optimize healing.

We believe in empowering our clients with knowledge. Our veterinarians take the time to explain the tenoscopic procedure, treatment options, and postoperative care, ensuring that horse owners are well-informed and confident in their decisions.

If your horse is experiencing lameness issues or if you suspect a tendon-related condition, contact us to schedule a consultation. Our veterinary team will assess your horse's unique needs and discuss whether equine tenoscopy is the right option for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
